Eating To Combat Inflammatory Disease

The inflammatory process is a natural bodily response to a foreign invader. This is a normal response by the body’s immune system. When an injury occurs, such as a cut or minor nick, the immune system responds to the injured area by causing redness and swelling that will aid in the healing process. This response does not only occur where there is an injury resulting in a wound, but it could be a response to a foreign invader, such as a bacterium, virus, fungus, etc.

When the immune system is performing at its peak in the normal intended way, the body will heal without further abnormal consequences. Should the immune system become impaired, the response to injuries, infections, etc. may be seriously impacted. In some instances the immune system can be underactive, or it may become seriously overactive.

Should an individual’s immune system become overactive, it can work against that individual’s best interests by attacking the body in different ways. Instead of a healing affect, it can cause the beginning of an inflammatory response. If the immune system is not brought under control, this inflammatory response will become chronic over a period of time.

Inflammatory response brought on by a malfunctioning immune system may present as arthritis of the joints, inflammation in the circulatory system, cardiovascular diseases, diseases of the skin and many other ailments. If the immune system is not brought under control, the resulting disease or condition can become chronic, as in arthritis when it becomes a degenerative joint disease. Discussing the possibility of inflammatory processes in your body with your healthcare provider is encouraged. He/she will perform such blood tests as a sedimentation rate and a C-reactive Protein test.

As we grow older, the immune system may tend to become weakened in individuals who have actively been lax in keeping their body in top physical shape. These are individuals who have more or less been living a sedentary lifestyle and have not been particularly responsive in keeping physically fit. The diet and the lack of exercise greatly contributed to an impaired immune system and the resultant inflammatory processes that occurred in the body.

For the patient with an inflammatory disease or condition, it is never too late to improve their physical wellness. Joints that have been degenerated or deformed cannot be restored to a normal state, however, the patient can improve their physical condition, becoming more flexible, improving their balance increasing vigor and living a pain-free lifestyle. To read more on the inflammatory process that occurs in the body, go to www.doctorsexercise.com, click on Newsletter and read the September 1, 2005 Vol. 5 No. 9 titled “Inflammatory Disease.”

For those coping with inflammatory disease, it is mandatory to change their lifestyles. Read more in Health Hints below.

Health Hints***

  • The sedentary individual must start walking and moving more. walk to stores, banks, beauty parlors, etc. instead of driving whenever possible. If your work requires sitting a great deal, be sure to take frequent stretching breaks. Try to walk a few flights of stairs instead of using the elevator.
  •  If you haven’t started an exercise program, now is the time, no matter your age. Discuss this with your healthcare provider concerning your physical condition and your ability to start an exercise program.
  • You then have to find an exercise program you can enjoy and live with. Most people staring exercise programs will quit within a month’s time. The “ Doctor’s Senior Exercise Program” that is can be done in the home is just the way to start. Learn more at: www.doctorsexercise.com.
  • The diet is extremely important as some foods contribute to the inflammatory process while other foods will combat the inflammatory process.
  • Foods contributing to the inflammatory conditions in the body are; refined foods, fats, and transfats, read meats, caffeine and lets not forget smoking.
  • Foods that will combat the inflammatory process by building the immune system are: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish and poultry. Increasing your fish in the diet will give you the necessary essential fatty acids. These are the omega-3 and omega 6 fatty acids. The color of the fruits and vegetables are important. The deeper the color the more benefit you will derive. increasing the boost to the immune system.
  • I also suggest reading 3 previous newsletters to give you more insight to eating properly. Find them at: www.doctorsexercise.com by clicking on Newsletter.
    1. September 15, 2001 “Living Healthier”.
    2. September 1, 2002 “Dieting”.
    3. January 1, 2006 “ Recipe For Health”.
